German classical pianist Gerhard Oppitz. | PERE BOTA
German classical pianist Gerhard Oppitz was appointed professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich at the age of 28 in 1981 - the youngest ever professor in the institute's history since 1846.
Prior to this, he had become the first German pianist to win the celebrated Artur Rubenstein Competition in Tel Aviv. This was in 1977, and the following year he recorded his first album, which started a recording career notable for various composers' complete cycles for piano.
One of these composers is Johannes Brahms, Oppitz having become widely recognised as a master of Brahms - one of the world's leading specialists.
With the Balearic Symphony Orchestra, he will be performing Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1. Composed in 1858 when he was 25, it was appreciated for having been a remarkably mature work. As it grew in popularity, it came to be regarded as a masterpiece.
