Ana Carla Maza was born in Havana around the time that German director Wim Wenders was making the 1999 ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ film documentary.
You could say that she was born into the rhythms of Cuba, though instrumentally she followed a route different to that of the legendary ensemble. The original 1997 album didn’t feature the cello, which is her instrument, and with which she made her stage debut at the age of ten.
Cuban styles, Brazilian, Latin, classical all combine with jazz, she saying that she has a classical background in complicated works by the likes of Brahms and Shostakovich on which she has drawn in taking on a challenge: music with feminine sensitivity and a celebration of ‘alegria’ - spontaneous joy. Also a singer, she is in Sa Pobla with Norman Peplow on piano and Marc Ayza on drums.
