Tchaikovsky meets jazz in Pollensa

Diego Hervalejo is a Mallorcan pianist and composer who has studied at the conservatory in Palma as well as in the Netherlands, the US and Barcelona, which was where he became involved in the Catalan jazz scene.

Highly influenced by the new generation of New York musicians, he has nevertheless maintained one foot in the classical music camp. He says that he has become “a Tchaikovsky fan” because for months he has had the composer’s works in his head while preparing for the concert that will close the Tchaikovsky Festival in Pollensa.

He explains that he has combined, reinterpreted and modified the concept of classical music in creating a show that merges the melodies of Swan Lake and The Nutcracker with the rhythms of current-day jazz. With his trio, he will also be performing an original work - Orquídia, inspired by Mallorca’s native flowers.
