The Catalan singer-songwriter Joana Serrat is performing today in Palma. | R.C.
Joana Serrat, who performs mainly in English but also in Catalan, is defined as a folk musician, but hers is a folk that has led her to drift into styles compared with the likes of the Cocteau Twins.
Thanks in no small part to her performing in English, she has gained considerable airplay and exposure in the US and the UK. BBC Radio 6 Music presenters such as Gideon Coe and Guy Garvey have featured her music.
Big Wave, her sixth album released in June this year, created a big wave. Recorded in Texas, it represents something of a change of direction, producing “an emotional and sonic ferocity”, as one reviewer has said.
She is one of the strongest musical talents to emerge from Spain and gain international recognition in recent years.
