The string ensemble Ensemble Tramuntana. | R.C.
Felix Mendelssohn was just sixteen when he wrote his String Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20.
The score was a birthday present to his violin teacher, Eduard Rietz. It was an almost invaluable gift, as Mendelssohn had in effect created a new genre of chamber music. “One of the miracles of nineteenth-century music”, as has been said, it revolutionised the chamber repertoire at the time - the 1820s.
The Ensemble Tramuntana was created by American violinist Barry Sargent in 2014. Its line-up alters according to its concert performances, this in itself reflecting the versatility of the ensemble. It has previously performed the Octet in Mallorca and will be reprising this, together with some pieces by Bach and Mozart, for the second concert in this year’s Inclassic season.
