Chant of the Sibil·la for Christmas at Santa Eulalia church. | ULTIMA HORA
The Cant de la Sibil·la, Song of the Sybil, is performed at church Matins services across Mallorca on Christmas Eve.
Declared a UNESCO masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity in 2010, the Sibil·la is one of three pieces that typically form the services - the Song of the Angel and the Sermon of the Calendar are the other two.
These are typically solo performances, the latter two by children, though some churches invite participation in the Song of the Angel.
For the Sibil·la, there are examples of breaking with the solo female singer tradition of recent decades. At Lluc Sanctuary, the Blauets, the children's choir, will be performing the the Sibil·la.
On Boxing Day, there will be a special performance at the historic Santa Eulalia Church in Palma. This will be by one of Mallorca's longest-established and best-known choirs, Capella Mallorquina.
