The group Cap Pela sings for the Christmas season. | Archives

Certain Christmas musical traditions in Mallorca may not quite rival the oldest of them all - the Cant de la Sibil·la on Christmas Eve - but they don’t lack for similar levels of popularity.

One involves a group of seven singers who have been celebrating their thirtieth anniversary this year - Cap Pela.

Their varied repertoire includes the Sibil·la, and whilst they aren’t just active at Christmastime, they have become a firm favourite for the festive period. The repertoire thus includes Christmas songs in their widest sense; The Pogues ‘Fairytale of New York’ is one. For an early Christmas concert in Inca, the publicity suggests the programme will comprise carols. Thirty songs, whichever ones they are, they will be to the highest of standards that have been Cap Pela’s hallmark for thirty years.
