Hombres G are a Spanish rock band with legendary status who spawn tribute acts that are not uncommon in Mallorca. For Palma's fiestas, it will be the real thing.
As was the case last year with Mallorcan indie band Antònia Font, the fiestas have a truly stand-out act for a concert separate to those in the squares on the night of January 19. Hombres G are the selected band this year, their history taking them back four decades and to Madrid's Rock-Ola in 1983.
They were associated with the La Movida Madrileña countercultural movement of the 1980s which did so much to change Spanish culture and society after the dictatorship. Their rise to fame wasn't based solely on their new-wave rock. They were pop idols with a devoted young female following.
Over the years, apart from live and compilation albums, they have recorded fifteen studio albums. All have been hugely successful. The name, incidentally, comes from a 1935 James Cagney film, 'G Men'.
The Hombres G concert at Son Fusteret will be completely free and there is no need to book tickets. Access to the event will be subject only to the capacity of the venue, which has a capacity for 20,000 people. This guarantees that all fans of this music group will be able to enjoy the performance free of charge.
Doors will open two hours before the concert is scheduled to start at 8pm. This allows those attending to enter the Son Fusteret venue from 18.00 hours. Entrance to the concert will be through the main gate, and it is essential to bear in mind that minors must be accompanied by adults. This requirement guarantees a safe environment for all ages.
