Gidon Kremer is regarded as one of the finest violinists and musicians of his generation. | Balearic Symphony Orchestra
Both one of the world’s most esteemed violinists and one of the most revered for his focus on developing young musicians, Gidon Kremer’s career has been somewhat unconventional.
It started at the age of four in Riga, Latvia, in 1951. He enrolled at the city’s music school when he was seven and went on to win numerous prizes, including the Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1970.
He left the former USSR in 1980 and settled in Germany, returning to Latvia in the 1990s and founding the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra. He has shunned the limelight and even been a critic of the ‘star’ culture at Switzerland’s Verbier Festival. His range has been extraordinary - from Mozart to 20th-century composers like Stockhausen and Philip Glass. He’ll be performing with the Balearic Symphony Orchestra for the second concert of the auditorium season.
