The soundscapes of Nils Frahm in Inca

Although not a household name, Nils Frahm is one of the most gifted musicians of the current day.

Originally from Hamburg, he studied classical piano as a child before developing an interest in mixing boards. A 2011 album, 'Felt', was met with critical acclaim, and it was this which promoted him onto the international music scene.

Broadly speaking, his music can be said to fall into the ambient category, and so he is in a tradition that includes the likes of Terry Riley, Brian Eno and Jean-Michel Jarre. He has said that he is interested in what music does to people's emotions and how attitudes can be changed with tones.

These tones, created with an array of keyboards - regular pianos, electric pianos, mellotron, synthesisers - plus drum machines, become astonishing soundscapes. And they undoubtedly play on the emotions; there is an almost spiritual quality to his work.
