Cellist Sureymis Tapanes has performed with Italian orchestras. | A.-B.
Sureymis Tapanes is a cellist originally from Cuba who first came to Europe with a classical group, Ars Longa, and eventually settled in Italy before moving to Mallorca.
Her background includes baroque music and in 2015 she completed her studies of the baroque cello at the conservatory in the Italian city of Novara. Branching out, she has created a project of baroque jazz, which showcases the fusion of French pianist and composer, Claude Bolling. A child prodigy, by the age of 14 in the mid-1940s, he was playing with renowned jazz musicians such as Lionel Hampton. He was noted for a series of crossover collaborations with classical musicians, baroque included.
These were particularly popular in the US and had great commercial success. So Sureymis Tapanes’ quartet with piano, double bass and drums offers a tribute to this ground-breaking composer.
