One of the great virtues of classical music is the wide variety of compositions for solo instruments.

The violin may top the list, but the diversity is such that there are works for instruments which might be said to normally take more of a backseat. The tuba is one such.

The Balearic Symphony Orchestra’s tuba soloist is Tobias Isern. He has featured in previous orchestra programmes, such as Vaughan Williams Concerto for Tuba, and he is featuring once more as a soloist for the first of the orchestra’s concerts this season at the Trui Theatre.

The invited conductor is Beatriz Fernández, who is the principal director of the Lira Castellonera, a symphony orchestra from Castelló in Valencia, and has conducted numerous other orchestras in Spain and abroad. The programme will feature a contemporary work - Concerto for a Tuba - by Hungarian composer and tuba artist, Roland Szentpalí. Dvorak’s Symphony No. 4 and Dances of Galanta by another Hungarian, Zoltan Kodaly, complete the programme; Kodaly is renowned for his method of musical education.
