Godspell was originally a 1971 off-Broadway production that soon transferred that year to London before making its full Broadway debut in 1976.

The creation of John-Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz, the London production made a star of David Essex. The 1973 film starred other at the time relative unknowns who had been in the off-Broadway and subsequent Melbourne and Toronto productions.

Director Emilio Aragón says that Godspell is one of his earliest memories, and he once performed in a version put on to raise funds for his school. Decades on, and actor Antonio Banderas told him that he wanted to revive Godspell. With Banderas as producer, they set themselves the challenge of revisiting the original but also taking account of “the gaze of the 21st century”.
