Grease, the 50th anniversary comes to Palma

Madrid-based SOM Produce is one of Spain’s leading entertainment companies. It has staged numerous highly successful musical productions, including Billy Elliot, The Sound of Music and West Side Story. And Grease is another.

The first performance of the Grease musical wasn’t in a theatre but in a nightclub in Chicago.

Set in the Chicago of 1959, the original was some way removed from what was to make Grease a worldwide phenomenon on both stage and screen. It was risqué and vulgar. Had it not been toned down, it may not have been the success that it was and still is.

That performance in the nightclub was in 1971. A year later the show was on Broadway. In 1973 it arrived in the West End. The latest SOM Produce production is a fiftieth anniversary celebration - not of the West End but of the nightclub.

With awards for best choreography, best lighting design and best outstanding female performance, Grease El Musical, the 50th anniversary special will be playing in Palma over four days in November.
