The first international opera coproduction

The performances of Henry Purcell's 'Dido and Aeneas' are the first in Palma since 1997.

Described as "a work within a work",  these performances also mark the first international opera coproduction at the Teatre Principal. At the Ravenna Festival in Italy, 'Dido and Aeneas on Saint Cecilia's Day' was premiered, the work within a work being that the production starts with a group of musicians deciding that they will stage the opera. Now in Palma, the Council of Mallorca's culture councillor, Antonia Roca, says the production places Mallorca on the international map with a key operatic work.

There are some 80 artists in all, featuring 16 soloists, 22 members of the theatre's choir and 18 members of the Balearic Symphony Orchestra.
