By Gaetano Donizetti, part of the 39th Opera Season. | Teatre Principal
The comic operas of Gaetano Donizetti are considered to be among the high points of the ‘opera buffa’ genre, and Donizetti’s ‘Don Pasquale’ is recognised as his comic masterpiece.
It premiered in Paris in January 1843, and by the end of that year had also been performed in Milan, Vienna, London, Lille and Brussels. It was an enormous success.
Pablo Ruiz, a graduate of Madrid’s School of Song, is billed to have the lead role for the Balearic Symphony Orchestra’s production of the Donizetti classic, the final opera for the Teatre Principal’s 2024/2025 season. He is something of a Donizetti specialist, having also had the role of Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale and Dr. Dulcamara in another of the Italian composer’s great comic operas, ‘L’elisir d’amore’.
