Hundreds of people to enjoy the Dimonis, the `ballada' and various activities in the Parc de sa Riera for the Nit de Animes. | P.- BERGAS
A few years ago, there was an initiative to reinforce traditions related to All Saints.
In part this was motivated by the inroads made by an Anglo-Saxon Halloween into island culture. There are three days of Allhallowtide, All Souls Day being the third (November 2), and an element of this initiative was a Night of Souls, traditional aspects including ghosts, magic and pumpkins for lanterns.
There is in fact a good deal of similarity with Halloween, and in Mallorca it comes from Catalan culture.
In Palma, the seventh Nit de les Ànimes, Night of the Souls, is being held. A feature will be a demons correfoc, with a gang of demons from Gràcia (Barcelona) having been invited.
Among other events will be dramatised performances in the cemetery, which is where ghosts - so Mallorcan mythology has it - terrorise disobedient children.
