Rua in Marratxi. | PILAR PELLICER
Rate
Marratxi has a particular place in Mallorca’s Carnival celebrations for two reasons.
One is that it is Portol in Marratxi where the most famous of the hammed-up burials of the sardines takes place - this goes over the top with its weeping cortege, among other things. The other is that Marratxi always has its Rua (Carnival parade) before anywhere else. This year is no different, and so the people of Marratxi will have their costumes on this weekend rather than next weekend; the Rua parades elsewhere are usually either on the Saturday or Sunday of what is, based on the Lent schedule, the Carnival weekend.
