Real Mallorca playing against Getafe in April, 2023. | CATI CLADERA
Spanish football has a history of clubs that have been there or thereabouts, rarely threatening the dominance of Barcelona and Madrid (Atlético as well as Real) but making a good fist of things nevertheless.
Valencia are among them. Often in the Champions League, they haven’t been since the 2019-2020 season, their decline having this season found them battling against relegation.
For Real Mallorca’s penultimate home game, Valencia provide the opposition. Mallorca, for all of a great deal of talk about recent matches having been crucial to be safe from relegation, have never really been in any danger. That has been because of teams below them, Valencia included. Much may be riding on this match for Valencia.
Mallorca’s final home game (June 4) is, curiously enough, against Rayo Vallecano, who were the opposition for last season’s final match.
