Another direct air route between the US and Mallorca is set to be launched. American Airlines is planning a Miami-Palma service. Details of this are as yet unavailable, but it is understood that it would initially involve a weekly flight.
Apart from the additional tourism potential that this route would represent, Miami is an important airport for Mallorcan hotel chains and employees, as it has connections to countries where these chains have operations - Aruba, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
The success of the United Airlines New York-Palma service is encouraging other airlines to look at the possibilities of Mallorcan routes. United, who launched the service in 2022, reported a 30% increase in reservations for the second season, which came to an end last month. And one of these airlines is American, part of the Oneworld alliance along with the likes of Iberia and British Airways.
The United service has become the airline's most profitable Spanish route and perhaps also in Europe. It has served to make Mallorca fashionable in the North American market, the island having rapidly established itself as a long-haul destination which is bringing benefits in terms of a high value added tourism.
