Yesterday the Bulletin carried out a random telephone poll to find out what people think about the visit of a US nuclear warship in the Bay of Palma. The opinions varied greatly, from people who said they were totally against it and others who had no objections whatsoever. Mancor de la Vall resident Jeremy Parker said he thought there should be none at all as they are not what we need. Dan Hamilton in Valldemossa said that during the 38 years the Enterprise has been visiting Palma there has been no incident or accident. Furthermore he stated that as far as he was concerned it was all a publicity stunt. Susan Shannon living in Puigpunyent did not think nuclear ships should be allowed as it puts the whole island at risk. Pollensa resident Charles Watson had no objections concerning nuclear ships entering the bay of Palma. I speak as an ex-Naval man and I believe the nuclear capacity of the ship is one hundred per cent safe and there should be no need for alarm. Of the same opinion was Keith Wright in Pollensa who said he thinks it is safe and that nuclear weapons are essential for world peace. On the other hand, Anthony Stanmore living in Pollensa said he was dead against it and not happy about nuclear weapons of any sort. May Black from Son Servera did not think they should be allowed in as it could be very dangerous. An American who did not want his name mentioned felt very strongly about the subject and said that this ship has been sailing for years and it has a one hundred per cent record of safety. He referred to the talk of the risk involved as a blown-up subject. And in his opinion the only thing the local government would achieve if they would not allow the ships to enter would be losing out on all the money that the 5'000 crew spend every time they come to the island.
What you think...
