IT was the worst case scenario for the Partido Popular and a result which they had feared for most of the campaign; they lost their overall majority in the Balearic government, Council of Majorca, Council of Ibiza-Formentera and the Palma city council. To make matters worse, the Party which can give them the key to all the local authorities they once controlled is the party which they have attempted to destroy over the last three weeks. Effectively Maria Antonia Munar, President of the Majorcan Unionist Party has become the ultimate match-maker. Not only does her party hold the key to the Balearic government, their three MPs could give the Partido Popular a majority, their two seats on the city council are worth their weight in gold also. But Munar is in an even better position still; she could effectively jump ship and form part of a socialist/nationalist coalition which would effectively mean that socialist leader, Francesc Antich, could become President, she could lead the Council of Majorca and Majorcan Unionist Miguel Nadal could become Mayor of Palma. The councils of Ibiza, Minorca and Formentera would remain in socialist hands.
