Chelsea football club came under fire yesterday in the Spanish media for winning the Champions League as a result of their defensive style of play. The Spanish media said that they were not worthy winners. I think you can take this criticism with a pinch of salt. Spain was not best pleased that either of their top teams (Real Madrid and Barcelona) failed to make the final. The Spanish media had been forecasting an all Spanish final for months and in the end they were totally wrong. Barcelona were defeated by Chelsea and Bayern overcame Real Madrid. Chelsea beat Barcelona in London and pulled off a 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp with ten men. I would say that they were worthy winners. The final was a rather dull affair but it was the perfect result for the Londoners who capped one of their most successful seasons to date with two trophies and a place in the Champions League. What the Spanish media didn´t point out yesterday was the Chelsea spirit. Ten-men at the Nou Camp and they came back and scored two goals and also they were able to score a vital equaliser with just minutes to go in the final. The fact that an English team beat the Germans on penalties is in itself an achievement. Barcelona may play beautiful football but at the end of the day it is the result that counts. They had two games to beat Chelsea but they were not able to do so. Worthy winners? I would say that Chelsea are because of their team spirit and courage.
