Captain Francesco Schettino, of the Costa Concordia, is accused of leaving his stricken ship with thousands of passengers aboard and heading to safety. He was ordered back aboard the vessel by the coastguard although the appeal and threats fell on deaf ears. Schettino has since been arrested and is under house arrest while a full investigation continues.

There has been much speculation; it has been reported that Schettino claimed that he “fell into a life raft” as a result of the force of the impact and also that he was dining with a young lady at the time of the accident. His lawyer has denied the allegations and has said that Schettino´s actions saved thousands of lives.
