DEAR SIR

HARRY Goodman's comments re the local tourist industry (or lack of it), are just the tip of the iceberg as the Balearics fall from grace. Can I give you another example of the pigheadedness.

Some years ago the SW of the island, Palmanova in particular had a perfectly acceptable bus service Palma- Palma Nova, which terminated in Palma Nova.
Some faceless Palma bureaucrat (without any market research) decided to dispense with the Palma Nova terminals - the result being everyday long queues of tourists and locals can be seen waiting in Palma Nova (and all stops to Palma) for buses that when they do finally arrive, they stand no change of boarding, as they're already full.

Next comes the “service” to Andratx. Since “re fashioning” the high street, locals and tourists alike, now find themselves deposited on the outskirts of the village (conveniently outside a bar openly quoted by local villagers as being owned by relatives of a town hall employee!)
There is no reason why the bus should not go up the high street into the village- take the Estellences turn off- pass the Town Hall then take the road behind Town Hall and rejoin the main Palma/Andratx/Pto Andratx Road.

Both the village and the local Wednesday market (a big tourist attraction) would then be served. Service instead of dis-service! Will anything change, I doubt it- so well done Turkey and Egypt- long may you thrive, as the ‘Balearics' it seems, chose to ignore the ‘wake up' call.

Yours Sincerely, A SW Resident
