TO the British government for placing overseas an order worth 3bn for carriages for the new cross-London Thameside route. Siemens in Germany is the company to get the business rather than the established Bombardier Transportation in Derby which has Canadian owners and an overall UK work force of abut ten thousand. There is talk of some employment being created in Britain but the bottom line is the loss of a contract both economically and reputationally significant.
