I pose the following points to the governing body of Majorca in attempt to understand why they are reluctant to take immediate action to stop the Botellón:
Does it deter tourists? YES
Does it adversely impact on businesses? YES
Does it cost the tax payer thousands of Euros each year in clean-up operations? YES
Does it disturb local residents? YES
Does it create a parking problem for tourists and residents alike? YES
Does it encourage driving whilst under the influence of alcohol? YES
Does it adversely impact on the health of the young people participating in the Botellón? YES
Does it encourage under age consumption of alcohol? YES
Try as I might, I cannot find any advantages that the Botellón may offer to counter the points raised above.
Consequently, faced with an overwhelming case for preventing any Botellón from taking place anywhere on the Island, I am bewildered at the reluctance of the elected Council, to legally prevent these types of gatherings!
