THIS weekend Real Mallorca´s Son Moix stadium will be a packed house for the opening La Liga match between Real Mallorca and Real Madrid. A capacity crowd of more than 20'000 is expected but it is a shame that Mallorca doesn´t attract similar gates for matches against so-called lesser teams. Let´s face it, Mallorca is in big financial trouble and really needs a helping hand from its fans. On the pitch the team appear solid but off it the club has severe financial problems with enormous debts.

Now, there are literally hundreds of thousands of would-be Mallorca fans who stay clear of the Son Moix. Why? I think Mallorca would settle for second team status (behind Real Madrid and Barcelona) as long as these fair-weather fans came to the ground. In Spain there are only two teams and this is one of the reasons why La Liga clubs are in such a dire financial state. I was at the Son Moix recently to watch Mallorca play against Atletico de Madrid in the City of Palma tournament. I had a great time and would urge others to go to a game or two or three this season. It is great for the island to have a top flight football team and this year Mallorca faces a fight for survival. La Liga is the best league in the world and you have a great opportunity to see some matches.
