A WAKE UP CALL

NICE to see that our politicians are returning to work after a well deserved rest. Balearic President Jaume Matas is busy meeting with his ministerial team this weekend and councillors across Majorca will soon be busy rolling up their sleeves. Just in case they may have forgotten in the hot summer heat, here is a reminder of some of their election promises. The Balearic government has promised to scrap the controversial tourist tax by October. The end is in sight for the one euro charge. (We hope).
The new Palma city council has pledged war on crime and there will be soon more officers patrolling the city. (I am looking forward to seeing them).
The new Calvia council has pledged to make the lives of non-Spanish European Union residents easier in the municipality by setting up a series of offices to deal with all their problems. (A move in the right direction which will greatly benefit new residents). The new Pollensa council has promised to clean-up the area, especially the port. (Good news because the beach is still in bad shape).
The new Deya council says that it will resolve the area's pressing water problems. (No more restrictions).
The Council of Majorca says that it is in favour of more golf courses and marinas. (Excellent, especially as Majorca is bidding for the America's Cup). Well there is my brief reminder. They are all election pledges and are some of the reasons why the electorate voted them into office. I have no doubt that work on all these projects will soon be underway and that there will be no silly excuses like “the coffers are empty because the last administration spent all the money.” No, they would never do that because that excuse simply doesn't wash. Does it?
