By Jason Moore THE Port of Andratx, despite all the development, still has the “feel” of a fishing port and I think this is one of the reasons why the area has been so successful. But now the fishing boats, which moor-up along the main promenade, could be moved to a new location away from the heart of the port.

This is a stupid move which will rob the area of some of its charm. The same thing happened in Soller when the naval base was demolished. I believe the area lost some of its beauty. Just why are the local authorities intent on ruining some of the picturesque parts of Majorca through development.

It is a question of out with the old and in with the new but this is not always the most successful policy. I think sizeable parts of the island are losing a great deal of charm because of overdevelopment. In the case of the Port of Andratx a new fish exchange has recently been completed and now the socialists, which form part of the ruling coalition, want to move the fishing boats. Doesn´t really make sense does it? An increasing number of tourists are starting to hit out at over development on Majorca and in many instances they are right. Now, is not the time to start changing things, it is better to look after what we´ve got.
