By Jason Moore THE reason why the Balearic's productivity rate is so low is because the immigrants aren't working hard enough, said a Balearic minister last week. Shame on them, they should pull-up their socks at once again. But what a disgraceful thing to say. Here we have, thousands of immigrants coming to the Balearics to work doing jobs which Majorcans no longer what to do, because they believe these “tasks are below them.” The Balearic government should be welcoming immigrants and saying thank you because these days the islands would look very few without them. Infact, if they all decided to leave tomorrow probably the islands would come to a standstill and we would have no productivity rate at all. I am fed-up with the Balearic politicians making disgraceful remarks about immigrants. Up until recently tourists were being blamed for everything but now it is the poor old immigrant. The reason why the health system is in a complete mess is because of immigrants. The reason why schools have a lack of resources is because of immigrants. The list is endless. Lets not forget that the Balearic government invited these people to come to the islands. They should have made sure that the health and education systems could cope before extending this invitation. When will some local politicians realise that immigrants are not second class citizens, they should be encouraged to settle here and given the same considerations as other local residents. No more outrageous statements please, I thought that Majorca was known for its warm welcome. Thankfully, Majorca has a cultural diverse community and this state of affairs is something to be proud of.
