TEACERS may have returned to school after their three week strike but the dispute over the Balearic government´s three language teaching system is far from settled. Infact, the President of the Balearic government, Jose Ramon Bauza, warned teachers yesterday that they could face disciplinary action if they refuse to teach the English, Catalan and Spanish education system. It appears that some schools have turned a blind eye to the government´s new education system claiming that they do not have the necessary resources to introduce it. This three-week dispute is turning increasingly ugly and the government could be accused of using "bully boy tactics." I know that industrial disputes are not nice with both sides often going over the top to push their claims but I think really that both government and the teachers could try and act in a more dignified manner, afterall we are talking about the education of our children. I would urge both sides to sit around a table and thrash out an agreement which ensures that the children of the Balearics get a proper education. Ofcourse, it is vital that local children learn English but teachers need to have the necessary rescues and help. I think the time has come to get this dispute settled once and for all. I don´t think the Balearic government has done themselves any favours and the teachers could be accused of being too quick to strike. But for the sake of everyone lets get this settled.
