Dear Sir,
A QUESTION FOR THE EDITOR

DO trading standards exist on this Island?
On Friday, 15th September, after some thought, I decided to treat myself to a new mobile phone.

As an existing Movistar customer (some 10 years), I was entitled to what seemed a good offer.

Unfortunately, the said phone was broken when I bought it, but I didn't realise this till much later that evening. I returned Saturday only to find the shop closed and then again Monday.

I was told I couldn't have a new phone or a refund but that the phone had to be sent to the “technical services” for repair. There was much discussion and I pointed out the phone had never been used, but they refused to budge.

I have lived here 17 years but have rarely felt so frustrated. So my question is: what are my rights or was I just taken advantage of as another “Brit abroad”?
