I am starting to despair about the state of the Majorcan tourist industry; no-one appears to be listening. This week a high level director of one of Europe´s leading tour operators said that the islands were too expensive and were facing serious competition from Turkey and resorts in North Africa. This was not a stunt by the tour operator to try and get hoteliers to drive down their prices, like many on the island believe, it was the truth. But what was the reaction from the local authorities? Absolutely nothing. I get the impression that all these warnings are falling on deaf ears and in the long run Majorca is going to pay the price. It is not only the British who are finding the island expensive; holiday sales to the island across the euro-zone have fallen with many people going to cheaper resorts in the eastern Mediterranean. Unless the industry starts listening and abandon its philosophy of everything will be alright on the night I can see Majorca losing its position as one of the top holiday spots in the world. The political infighting, which also involves the minister for tourism, is not helping this state of affairs but I sincerely hope that one day soon everyone will awaken to the fact that Majorca is facing a crisis situation.
