I am amazed at the campaign which has been launched in the Port of Andratx to get the fishing boats moved to another area.

The business community seriously believes that by moving the boats to a far end of the port and clearing the nets and other fishing accessories, the Port of Andratx will be a better place. I would say that the port would lose some of its character and surely there are enough cafeterias with large terraces. Full marks to the Majorcan Socialist Party (PSM) for launching a campaign to keep the port how it is. Unfortunately, they are almost on their own, with much of the political establishment siding with the pro-move campaign.

In Majorca at the moment, it seems to be a case of out with the old and in the new. In some cases this is a wise move but not in the Port of Andratx. The beauty of the area is that it is still a working port which attracts visitors - in some cases, more than the bars and restaurants. If the council wants to prove that Andratx is a real democracy then everyone should have their say, not just the business community. I think that it is such a controversial subject that the council should consider organising a referendum. Unfortunately, I fear that the move will go ahead sooner rather than later.
