THE new National Health Hospital on the outskirts of Palma, Son Espases, will soon be accepting its first patients which will mean the end of Son Dureta, Palma´s big NHS hospital.
While a new hospital is always good news, no-one is too sure what is going to happen to Son Dureta once Son Espases opens. Will the building just be left empty until someone devises what can be done with a former hospital? You would have thought that this question would have been answered even before building started on the new hospital. It is an enormous site and it is a great pity that it is just going to remain empty while the city council ponders its future.
Already, we have the former Real Mallorca stadium, Luis Sitjar, which is in the centre of Palma, which has been abandoned for many years and it is now in a terrible state of disrepair. There is also the old Palma prison which has been similarly abandoned. And then there is the now defunct Flex mattress factory which remains empty and continues to deteriorate. The city council needs to take action and decide quickly what to do with all these abandoned buildings. It is all very well going for brand-new state of the art installations but first you must decide what to do with the old building!
