Dear Sir,

AIRLINES, FOR INFO...

GIVEN the loss of BMI from Heathrow over the winter - maybe longer - are you aware that Palma flights are about to be similarly chopped by easyJet from both East Midlands and Luton? For those of us living in the Midlands area it is a serious loss, and I don't quite understand it because the last few flights from each location have been nearly full in both directions. There are no flights listed from Luton after November, and although there are some listed from East Midlands up to new year, it's curtains after that.

There's sure to be a further serious loss of visitors to the island, yet there's absolutely no sign of the tourism authorities there showing the slightest concern. Publicity for winter events on Majorca is poor, disjointed, and has no central reference. Those employed and paid well in Majorca's tourism departments should get paid by results. Their stupid out-of-touch public comments show that they really don't give a toss.

Dear Sir,

Withdrawal of BMI services to Palma from London

YOU might like to know that your front page article on the withdrawal of BMI services was incorrect in one respect – the withdrawal is “indefinite” not just over the winter. I heard this from the cabin staff yesterday and checked with BMI customer services who confirmed that this was correct.

Those of us who live west of London and come over to Palma regularly will be badly hit. There is now no airline that flies directly from Heathrow to Palma.

Dear Sir,

FOLLOWING Obama's lead for getting a gong for nothing, I would like to suggest that the mish-mash of party leaders in the Consell de Mallorca be put forward for no less than two Nobel prizes: one for science and one for literature.

The first for solving a dilemma, that has had chemists scratching their heads for centuries, by apparently developing an adhesive for chalk and cheese.
The second for putting a modern spin on the very old phrase involving silk purses and sow's ears.
Yours,

John Rule, Sol de Mallorca
