Goldman Sachs posted a quarterly loss for only the second time since it went public in 1999. In volatile market conditions the US bank's revenue fell by 60 per cent compared with the same period in 2000.

The board of the Japanese camera-maker Olympus dismissed its British president Michael Wood after only six months. Mr Wood, who had worked for Olympus for twenty years, said his dismissal followed inquiries he had authorised into excessive consultancy fees.

In the Liberian presidential election the incumbent Ellen Johnson Sirleaf failed to get the necessary 50 per cent of the vote and faces a run-off against Winston Tubman, a former diplomat. The election was held a few days after President Sirleaf was named as one of three women recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Pakistan's army chief, Ashfaq Kayani, said America should “think ten times” before taking unilateral action on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border against Taliban and other militant groups attacking Afghan cities from bases in Pakistan.
