..collectively for the Conservative backbenchers in the House of Commons who rebelled against David Cameron's leadership at a time of crisis in the European Union when he needed to be able to speak authoritatively for Britain. The motion chosen by the rebels, calling for a referendum on Britain's membership of the EU, was not urgent and could easily have been delayed until events in Brussels had been resolved. As it was, Mr Cameron was embarrassed and even humiliated by his own MPs in an international environment.
