The new Magalluf

ENOUGH is enough. At last there is a united front on Magalluf to try and rid the resort of all its ills. The British and Spanish government have joined forces with the tour firms to tackle Magalluf once and for all. Last Summer five people died in the resort and countless more were injured. As I said in this space yesterday something had to be done and the British and Spanish governments and the tour firms appear to be of  the same opinion. At a meeting in London yesterday they agreed to tackle the problem head on. Magalluf, in its present form, is not fit for purpose. The Melia hotel group have also agreed to push ahead with plans to upgrade its hotels in the resorts and build a giant leisure complex. The announcement yesterday came after a warning from the tour firms that Magalluf was starting to tarnish Majorca´s good image. There were fears that tourists could go elsewhere. Yesterday´s announcement could mean the beginning of the end for Magalluf in its present form. The new investment by the Melia Group, the owners of Sol Hotels, will mean that soon Magalluf could have the finest facilities of any resort in the Balearics. The potential of the new Magalluf is enormous. Upgraded hotels and more leisure facilities could mean that Winter tourism becomes a reality in Calvia. With the Madrid government aboard Calvia council will also be able to introduce tougher legislation which will rid Magalluf of its  street prostitutes and all of its other ills.
