NEXT year´s royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton should give Britain a major lift. The timing couldn´t have been better. Britain faces an uncertain economic future but there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Some will argue, that at a time when Britain´s coffers are almost empty, the last thing the tax-payer needs is a royal wedding.
But it will certainly be money well spent. The one thing that Britain is very good at, is pomp and ceremony, and the wedding will be a showcase for Britain. It will also be a time for celebration. I remember when Prince Charles married Princess Diana in 1981.
The economic conditions were very similar but it certainly gave Britain a lift. I can see this wedding doing the same next year. Yesterday´s media headlines were dominated by the announcement clearly underlining the fact that the British royal family is always big news. The announcement is also going to increase the status of the royal family. Afterall, they are a modern couple. The Prince is marrying his former university flat-mate. They are definitely a modern couple. The next big question is whether or not Prince Charles will become King or if it will go straight to Prince William. Watch this space.
