MAJORCA´S economy is based on tourism and has been for many years. I was very surprised therefore that when I had to visit the central Police station in Passeig Mallorca due to having my handbag stolen no attempt was made by any officer to speak English to me. Luckily I was able to call on my Spanish daughter-in-law for help; not one word was addressed to me by the interviewing officer in any language, and no support or sympathy was shown-after all I was a tourist in her counrty and so her responsibility. Bearing in mind that tourism is of vital importance and that most tourists use English surely those officials who come into contact with visitors should have an adequate knowledge of that language.
