For Italy's new unelected prime minister Mario Mont¡ who showed his commitment to Italian tradition by attending the opening night of the 2011/12 opera season at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan where the best seats cost as much as US$ 3'200. Although Sr Monti's predecessor Silvio Berlusconi had imposed cuts on La Scala's subsidies the production of the opening opera, Mozart's Don Giovanni, was well received by the house's critical audience. Britain's Bryn Terfel sang Leporello; Daniel Barenboim was conducting for the first time as music director of La Scala.
