IS ime or is the centre of Palma rather lacking in Christmas atmosphere this year? Everything seems to be in place from the lights to the markets but there appears to be little cheer. What I don´t understand is why the city council insists on turning off the lights relatively early, usually before 11p.m. The Paseo Maritimo looks fantastic when the lights are on but as they are switched off relatively early it soon lacks any sort of festive effort. Also, I don´t get the impression that shops are making much of an effort. Years ago shop-fronts would be nicely decorated but this year there is nothing. Surely, in these difficult times the local authorities should be doing their bit to encourage shoppers especially at this time of the year? The city council has reduced the amount of money it spends this year on festivities such as Christmas. I believe that this is a big mistake that could have serious consequences. I know that times are hard this year and that money is tight but there is no excuse for not giving the city a festive feel. But it is not just Palma, other parts of the island are not even bothering with Christmas lights this year which is a very stupid decision. Times may be hard and everyone is feeling the pinch but it is still Christmas.
