SO we have a new minister for tourism, Jaime Martínez, and I sincerely hope that he takes note of some of the suggestions and complaints which have been made by Bulletin readers this year about tourism on Majorca. For the benefit of all I will outline some of the more pressing problems which need resolving.
l The muggers (otherwise known as the street prostitutes in Magalluf) need to be outlawed before the start of the Summer season.
l The number of hotels offering all inclusive packages need to be curtailed because otherwise hundreds of bars and restaurants in the resorts will go out of business.
l A real drive needs to be launched to promote Majorca as an all year around holiday destination. It is vital that the local ministry for tourism holds talks with airlines, tour firms and hoteliers to decide on a plan of action.
l Businesses which open during the Winter months should be given incentives either tax breaks or reductions in their social security bills.
l A promotion campaign across europe underlining that Majorca has something for everyone.
l A new law which allows home owners to rent out their properties legally without fear of prosecution.
l Investment in resorts and additional police officers with the necessary language skills.
l And above all the end of the senseless red tape which is denting business investment.
