THERE is obviously a wealth of experience and know-how within the Balearic tourist industry. Infact, these islands are home to some of the most successful business people in the country who helped pioneer the Majorcan tourist industry. So why doesn´t the Balearic government take advantage of the wealth of experience which exists and recruit a tourism minister from the industry rather than political circles? As we all know tourism is the lifeblood of the local economy and it is also a multi-billion euro business. Over the last five years I think the islands have had at least five tourism ministers. This is an outrageous state of affairs. How can we have a tourism plan for the future if ministers of tourism last for only a couple of years or in some cases a couple of months? I would encourage the local government to fill the local ministry for tourism with experts from the industry who know how to take tourism forward and not backwards. Unfortunately, politics is always king.
