Why is there all this fuss in the West about Crimea, which was part of Russia until it was incorporated into Ukraine 60 years ago?
The people have voted. They want to return to the motherland.
We support the people of Northern Ireland, the Falklands and Gibraltar in their determination to remain British but we are prepared to let Scotland go, if the majority so decide, so why do we attempt to deny the people of Crimea their democratic wishes? When our leaders talk about Russian aggression, isn't this a case of the pots calling the kettle black, after what we did in Iraq and Afghanistan? And why are we supporting the overthrow of democratically elected, albeit anti-western, presidents (Yanukovich in Ukraine and Morsi in Egypt)?
The West needs Putin to cooperate with us in doing something about the disaster in Syria but there's not much chance of that happening now, which probably means that there is no end in sight to the suffering of the Syrian people.
Yours faithfully,
George TunnellV
