Dear Sir,
I’m afraid Frank Leavers, understandably, has got his numbers wrong in regards to the recent poll about Catalan independence.
I say understandably, as most, if not all of the British press did as well.
Depending on different sources, the population of Catalonia is anything between 7.5 and 8.2 million people, so lets call it 7.8 million.
Also, and according to different sources, anything between 1.8 and 2.2 million people actually voted, so lets say 2 million, 80% of them voting yes.
I think that it can be safe to say that most of the independence “fanatics” voted, so in real terms, only 1.6 million people out of 7.8 million, i.e. 21% of the population actually voted for independence, less than half of the Scottish yes vote.
What the results would be if a real and legal referendum were held is anyone’s guess, I personally very much doubt that it would surpass 35% of the population.
By the way Frank, I sent you an e-mail the following day saying that it was for gas, but it was sent back, probably have the wrong one.
