Dear Sir,

I refer to the debate in your letters page (Majorca Daily Bulletin, January 9, 2016) about Britain and Europe. For people of my generation (I was born during the Second World War) the main reason we wish to preserve and extend the European Union is surely because millions of people died in two world wars and subsequent conflicts so that evil, aggressive and selfish nationalism (Hitler, the IRA, ETA) would become history.

At the end of the last century the world seemed to be moving towards more integration and less division. Our hopes have been dashed by those petty nationalists in Britain, France, Spain etc. who wish to turn the clocks back and look inwards, instead of outwards to the world beyond our frontiers and the greater good of the greatest number.

Yours faithfully,
George Tunnell
