I was glad to see that Anna Skidmore is to be honoured by the Majorca Tourist Board, an organisation she served so well before retirement, for so many years. Anna will receive a top award from the Tourist Board at their annual prize-giving ceremony later this year. Anna helped successfully promote the island across the globe and the local tourist industry owes her a great deal. Anna, being the professional she is, was always looking to put Majorca in the best light possible whatever the situation. I remember doing an article on the heavy snowfall which had fallen on the island under the headline freezing Majorca. As a junior reporter on this paper I was rather proud of my story: after all, snow in Majorca is rather uncommon. The next day I received a call from Anna saying that I had missed the point about the weather. You should have said that it was a golden opportunity for the children of Majorca to see snowfall, she told me. She continued: some have never seen snow at all. It was a very good point of course. But that was Anna, making the best promotion possible for the island of sunshine. You see a headline Joy for Majorca’s Children As It Snows is far better promotion for the island than Freezing Majorca. It was a valuable lesson which has stayed with me for the rest of my career. And everytime it snows and am I writing the headline I always think of Anna. You see when you live on a holiday island, promotion and good news is everything.
Well deserved
